St. John of God was a 16th-century Portuguese-born Spanish friar known for his compassion and dedication to serving the poor and sick. He founded the Order of Hospitaller Brothers, also known as the Brothers Hospitallers, dedicated to caring for the sick and those in need.
Born in Portugal in 1495, John of God led a tumultuous life before finding his calling to serve the sick and suffering. He cared for the sick and homeless in Granada, Spain, founding a hospital to provide for their needs. Despite facing many challenges and hardships, he remained steadfast in his commitment to serving others with love and compassion.
He’s selfless dedication to caring for the poor and sick earned him a reputation as a saint during his lifetime. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VIII in 1690 and is celebrated as the patron saint of hospitals, the sick, books, and the dying.
