LENT WEEK 5: DAY 34
But Jesus spoke up “The healthy do not need a doctor but the sick people do” (Luke 5:31). Jesus came to heal the sick and restore them to health. In talking about sickness here, we refer to all sorts of sickness, illness, and diseases. He healed the mother-in-law of Simon Peter of fever (Mark 1), he healed the people of the city from all kinds of diseases and sicknesses and infirmities (Matthew 8:14-17). Today, the world has stopped believing in the healing power of Jesus Christ and has resorted to other orthodox and unorthodox methods. I want to start by telling you that doctors don’t heal, they only treat and God heals and that’s why involving God in our cases of illness and treatments is capital. In the time of Jesus, there were many doctors, but the people kept going to Jesus for healing because they knew healing the sick was Jesus’ mission. To this, the psalmist says God sends his word and heals our diseases (Psalms 107:20), and Jesus is the Word of God made flesh (John 1:14) to heal us. To tell you how important healing is for the people, Jesus will describe healing as the children’s bread (Matthew 15:26) in other words their basic need for survival. Jesus came to heal even the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds (Psalm 147:3) and he will go to the point of being wounded for it and shedding his blood (1 Peter 2:24). Even when his life was at stake, Jesus kept the healing mission going (Matthew 12:15). Jesus even defiled the Pharisees by healing on the Sabbath and making enemies for himself (Luke 13;14). This is to tell you that Jesus can go to any extent just to be sure you are healed. On your part, you must ask for the healing of God and be sure of the fact that he will heal you (Jeremiah 17:14) and God will heal you and restore you to health (Jeremiah 30:17). David affirms that he called the Lord for help and he healed him (Psalm 30:2). You must turn to the Lord and ask him for help and he will be ready to grant you, his healing. This is exactly what Jesus meant when he said ask and you shall be given (Matthew 7:7). We need to ask for healing from the Lord and watch him perform the healing in our lives. Several people in the time of Jesus got healing by asking to touch the fringe of his cloak (Matthew 14:35-36), not even for him to touch them but for them to touch him. This is just to tell you that everything about Jesus points toward the well-being of mankind and his healing. The healing process doesn’t require the physical presence of Jesus but just a word from him (Matthew 8:8). There is healing and mighty power in the word of the Lord and we must take advantage of that. This healing power is still at work in the world today and Jesus still heals today. He gave the power of healing to his apostles to heal every kind of disease and sickness (Matthew 10:1) and Peter used the same power when he healed Aeneas who had been bedridden for 8 years (Acts 9:32-34). There is an important element that comes after asking and that element is faith, believing that Jesus can still heal you today. To the men who asked for his healing Jesus returned this question to them “Do you believe I am able to do what you want?” (Matthew 9:28). You must be sure and convinced that Jesus can heal you for the healing to be operational in your life. Many people pray for healing but do not believe they will receive the healing and since they live in doubt, they also do not receive the healing. Healing requires faith. In his own hometown, Jesus couldn’t perform any miracle there except a few healings by touching because of their unbelief (Mark 6:5-6). You have to raise your faith and believe in the power of God to heal so that you can be healed. The prayer of faith saves the one who is sick and the Lord restores him to health (James 5:15). Note here that we pray in faith and God heals. Ours is to pray and God performs the miracle. It is the Lord that sustains the sick on their sick bed, not the medicine nor the doctors but the lord who does and grants him full recovery (Psalm 41:3). God is who you need to make your healing perfect, everyone else is an auxiliary. Trust in the power of the Lord to heal and pray for healing and you shall not be put to shame. It is so beautiful to see how the bible names all sorts of diseases, even the ones affecting the bones (Psalm 6:2). Do not hesitate to return to the lord for protection and healing be sure he will heal and restore you to health whatever the condition you might be suffering from. Remember with God all things are possible even the most desperate and impossible cases are possible. The uncurable diseases are curable. He has the perfect key to healing just turn to him with all your heart and be healed. In Corda Matris.
